Domestic semiconductor manufacturing might be about to get a very interesting shake-up. According to a recent report, SK hynix is in discussions with Intel about a potential partnership to manufacture memory chips in the United States, and specifically at Intel’s massive Ohio fab site. After five years, Samsung’s 512GB DDR5 memory modules get their first direct rival from Micron, which also promises to offer speed bins up to 9200 MT/s. But their prices could be way too high even for hyperscalers.

Micron has demonstrated what it claims is the world’s first 512GB DDR5 module on multiple server platforms, and in doing so, the memory chip maker gives data center administrators a path to obscene amounts of RAM in server environments—up to a whopping 12TB in a standard dual-socket enterprise server chassis featuring 24 memory DIMM slots.
